William Wagner, engineer of the fireboat J.M. Hutchinson, was born in Buffalo Janu , a son of Charles and Margaret (Dower) Wagner. He obtained his education in the public schools of his native city, and commenced his practical life . Although a good friend of Gandhi, most of the time Tagore stayed out of the politics. He did not support the idea of nationalism and militarism from the point of view of a universal humanity.
